That week I did six sunrises in a row, with six 3am starts back to back and long drives to various locations each morning I was in need of a couple weeks in Lockdown afterwards! Who’d have thought it would go on for so long! I’m so happy this sunrise paid off and it was worth all the effort. This was taken at Seacliff Beach in North Berwick, Scotland. I arrived about 5am an hour ahead of sunrise. The beach was so peaceful and isolated. This is my favourite time for photography, I love the solitude and beauty it brings. After being locked down in the city I was so shocked to go out and see everything was green! It felt liked I’d slept through the seasons and it really took me by surprise how beautiful life was outside of the city walls. My first place I went to had to be my favourite little spot in Glencoe. Also the favourite spot of what felt like a million midges! It was worth it though as a couple weeks after taking this shot I found out this image won the National Trust competition and will feature in their Autumn/Winter magazine. The River Coupall flowing over rocks makes for a great waterfall shot with the mountain in the background…well that’s if the Scottish weather plays ball! I can go for the same composition and come away with very different shots. It’s pretty hard to find an original composition of this view point so this time I went for a wider lens and a landscape view. It’s best visiting here after some heavy rainfall so the river is in full flow. I’ve visited in summer before and the waterfall had completely dried up. It just didn’t have the wow factor plus you have to battle the midges. It’s nice to look back at the same location over the years to see how your photography has progressed. Back when I took this image I was reading lots of landscape photography books and had just booked a landscape one to one workshop with Ross Hoddinott Photography. I was really inspired by his books and made the trip to Cornwall later that year to learn everything I could. For me I love learning on a workshop as I need to physical be shown a new skill. I visited in November and the lighting was spectacular. I can see why the Scottish Highlands is a must do road trip for tourists! All the view points from The Quiraing are best at sunrise as all the cliffs are east facing. The views can also be beautiful in winter but the roads might not be passible in snow and icy conditions. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee7b6eceeed1a2173d8f7de/1613840617692-9U09J7UKKQ12UJDTB99R/small+skye+quiraing+tree.jpg 10 Beautiful places to visit on The Isle of Skye Don’t rush back for your hotel breakfast just yet as there’s still the famous lone tree to see at The Quiraing. Pack a flask of coffee and some snacks and sit and take in these views. Most of the hotels will make you up a takeaway breakfast if they know you are heading out early so just ask. If you are going here for photography don’t rush and try to photograph these 3 locations in one morning. You want that warm glow from the sun so spend a couple of mornings here. This view point is very close to the first view point by the car so they could be done on the same morning. This view point is about a 10 minute walk from the car if that. What to wear? Layers, layers and more layers. Even in the summer it can be pretty windy up here. For this location I would opt for hiking boots but it can be very boggy so be prepared to get muddy. If you aren’t wandering far from the car you could opt for wellington boots but be very careful it’s slippy and those drops are pretty steep! Insider tip…There’s a little burn (that’s Scottish for stream) right by the car park to wash the mud of your boots before getting back in the car. It’s a good place to visit at sunset but during the day can also be good if you can get a moody sky like this one. I would recommend wellington boots if you are planning to head down onto the beach. No one likes wet feet! There’s only space for 3 or 4 cars here so it can be a bit tricky in peak season to get a parking space. Once parked it’s around a 20 minute walk down to the beach.
